One of the most frequent sentiments I come across is, “Oh, I can’t __; I’m much too old! “Or, “I’m far too stuck in my ways; I’ll never be able to change.”
Well, I’m here to kindly tell you that you’re wrong. Despite what you, or others in your life, have been telling you, it’s never too late. It’s never too late to make a change, to clean up your life, or to fulfill your childhood dream. It’s never too late to travel across the world, to go back to school, to switch careers, or to start a family. We must strive to see each day as a new beginning; an opportunity to start something new.
Yes, we may have obligations and responsibilities that we may have to concede to, so it may not be completely plausible to quit our jobs today and move across the country. However, there is no rule – written or unwritten – that says we must remain in a situation that brings us unhappiness, or that doesn’t allow us to exercise our passions. I firmly believe that we are free to do what we please with our lives and that we should, because we only live once. So, why not entertain the idea of living your dreams, or living up to your full potential? Why not talk to your family, or your boss, or your friends about what it is you’d really like to be doing? What is there to lose?
I encourage you to have these discussions. And I encourage you to not let fear, doubt, spite, or avoidable stressors paralyze you from acting. I encourage you to not be afraid; to not doubt yourself; to not let others deter you from realizing your dreams; to not continue a habit out of spite to others; to not overlook opportunities to take time for yourself. In fact, try putting yourself first for once, for this is not selfishness, but self-love, and giving yourself the time and attention that you need will help you to love others more deeply and truly than ever before.
Now is the time to act. Now is the time to make a change. Take a leap of faith, because you’re worthy of being happy and you’re deserving of living the life you’ve dreamed.
Please, my friends, always remember that today is the first day of the rest of your life and that it’s never too late.
